Monday was a deeply sad day for the entertainment world. On one side, Prem Sagar, son of Ramanand Sagar and a well-known film and television producer, died at the age of 84; on the other, actress Priya Marathe also bid farewell to the world at just 38. Both pieces of news plunged the film and TV industry into deep mourning.<\/p>\n
Prem Sagar breathed his last at around 10 am. He had been unwell for a long time and was being treated at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. When doctors saw his condition worsen, they advised the family to take him home. He passed away a short while after returning home.<\/p>\n
Prem Sagar was the son of the renowned director Ramanand Sagar and carried his father\u2019s legacy forward. After Ramanand Sagar left an indelible mark on Indian television with the historic serial Ramayan, Prem Sagar too produced several popular shows and films through Sagar Arts. He was involved in the production, direction and cinematography of films and TV serials.<\/p>\n
Prem Sagar was a student of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. He joined the 1968 batch and studied photography and cinematography in depth. After completing his studies, he advanced his career by joining his father\u2019s production house, Sagar Arts. During this time he worked as a cinematographer and director on many films and serials.<\/p>\n
The entire industry was plunged into grief at his death. Arun Govil, who played Lord Ram in Ramayan and was by then a Member of Parliament, paid tribute, saying:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe death of Shri Prem Sagar, son of the late Ramanand Sagar, who gave Ramayan the form of a TV serial and carried the ideals and teachings of Lord Ram to the masses through the electronic medium, and a well-known film producer, is extremely sad. May Lord Shri Ram give his soul a place at his feet and give the family the strength to bear this deep sorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshman in Ramayan, also expressed his feelings on social media. He wrote:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is very shocking news that we have lost Prem Sagar, son of Ramanand Sagar of Ramayan. Om Shanti.\u201d<\/p>\n
The entertainment world received another big shock when news came that Priya Marathe, a well-known actress of television and Marathi cinema, had also died. She was only 38 and had been battling breast cancer for a long time. She finally succumbed to the illness.<\/p>\n
Priya Marathe was a popular television actress. She had showcased her acting talent in several serials and had also made a distinct mark in Marathi cinema. Her departure at such a young age was shocking and painful for the entire industry.<\/p>\n
That day the entertainment world lost two artists who made significant contributions in their respective fields. While Prem Sagar worked behind the scenes and gave new direction to Indian TV and films, Priya Marathe won the hearts of audiences with her talent on screen.<\/p>\n
