The fertiliser supply crisis in Rewa district had become serious. At various distribution centres, farmers stood in line for hours, sometimes all day, but mostly ended up disappointed. This was a worrying situation for a country that considered itself agriculture-based and called farmers annadata (food providers).<\/p>\n

Administrative claims and the reality on the ground<\/h3>\n

Administrative sources claimed fertiliser was available in sufficient quantity in the district, but the picture on the ground was quite different. Farmers asked: if fertiliser was available, where was it going? Why did farmers return empty-handed every day?<\/p>\n

Farmers said that even after standing in line since the night before, the fertiliser ran out by the time their turn came in the afternoon or evening. Elderly people, women and children were also in the queues. Farmers alleged irregularities in the distribution system, particularly a lack of transparency at double-lock centres and societies.<\/p>\n

Impact on farming and production<\/h3>\n

The shortage was directly affecting crops. Without timely fertiliser, crops were weakening and the likelihood of reduced production was growing. If this continued, a food-grain crisis could arise in future.<\/p>\n

Dr Saurabh Sonawane, officiating Collector of Rewa, said work was continuously under way to streamline fertiliser distribution, and that farmers would get their entitlement on time under the fixed schedule.<\/p>\n

Fertiliser distribution schedule announced<\/h3>\n

Distribution at Karhiya Mandi on September 11 was postponed.<\/p>\n

Distribution from Karhiya Mandi was scheduled for September 13.<\/p>\n

Distribution at double-lock centres Umri, Chakghat, Gurh and Jawa was scheduled for September 11.<\/p>\n

Distribution in society areas Kuthila, Teonthar, Luk, Kheera, Majhiyar, Barau, Bamhangawan and Madwa was scheduled for September 11.<\/p>\n

The fertiliser supply crisis in Rewa had exposed the hollowness of administrative claims. When farmers could not get fertiliser on time despite standing in line, it was the result of negligence and weak monitoring in the system. Ensuring transparency and distributing fertiliser according to actual need should have been the administration\u2019s primary responsibility.
