The Union Culture Ministry is preparing a plan to turn Eran, an ancient archaeological site in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, into an international tourist destination. Eran is one of 15 archaeological sites in the country chosen for development as a "Living Cultural Space" under the central government's DESH scheme.<\/p>\n
The site lies about 75 kilometres from Sagar city. The Bina River, a tributary of the Betwa, surrounds it on three sides, giving it an island-like setting. The town is nearly 1,500 years old and dates to the Gupta dynasty, which ruled much of northern and central India from Pataliputra, now Patna. Emperor Samudragupta is believed to have spent his last years at Eran.<\/p>\n
Eran was discovered in 1838 by T.S. Bert, and Alexander Cunningham, the first Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India, surveyed it in 1874. A Samudragupta inscription, described as about 1,700 years old, was excavated and taken to Calcutta, where it is kept in the Indian Museum. Some artefacts from Eran are reportedly in museums in London, and efforts will be made to bring them back.<\/p>\n
The site has an ancient temple with a 13-foot Chaturbhuj Vishnu idol and an 11-foot-tall Varaha idol, reflecting the Gupta rulers' devotion to Vishnu.<\/p>\n
A senior ASI official said Eran is little known and expressed hope that better infrastructure and connectivity would make it a major tourist attraction. For Sagar district, the project could bring visitors, jobs for guides and local businesses, and wider attention to the Gupta heritage of Bundelkhand.
