The Madhya Pradesh government has formed a five-member committee to investigate claims that at least 10 people died after drinking spurious liquor in Dewas district between September 27 and October 16. The Ujjain divisional commissioner constituted the panel after conflicting accounts of the deaths emerged.<\/p>\n
The committee is headed by Ujjain Additional District Magistrate Pratham Kaushik. Its other members are an Additional Superintendent of Police from Mandsaur, a Sub-Divisional Police Officer from Ratlam, a Deputy Excise Commissioner from the Ujjain divisional flying squad and the Regional Director of Public Health and Medical Education. It has been asked to examine the causes and circumstances of the deaths, along with technical and administrative issues, and submit a factual report within 15 days.<\/p>\n
The district administration initially rejected the claims as false and misleading. It said 10 people died in Chandana village between October 1 and 15 but attributed the deaths to old age, common illnesses, brain haemorrhage and ill health caused by heavy drinking, not spurious liquor. Viscera samples from two of the dead have been sent to a forensic science laboratory, and the cause will be determined once those results arrive.<\/p>\n
The opposition has taken a different position. Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari claimed that 22 people died after drinking spurious liquor in Chandana, Binjana and nearby areas over the past month and that at least 40 people lost their eyesight. He accused the administration of hiding the deaths and protecting the liquor mafia.<\/p>\n
