The pattern was uneven across cities. Bhopal received more than 41 inches, about 9 per cent above normal, while Indore was around 27 per cent below normal and Ujjain’s Gambhir Dam did not reach its desired level, the report said. Indore draws most of its water from the Narmada, about 450 million litres a day, with Yashwant Sagar and Bilawali adding about 30 million litres.<\/p>\n
Storage looks healthier than the rainfall alone would suggest. Of the state’s 54 major dams, 35 were at 90 per cent of capacity or more and nine were between 75 and 90 per cent, according to the report, and Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat directed officials to keep watch on the 35 fullest dams. The position appears to have improved since August, when an IANS report quoting the state government said dams held about 49 per cent of capacity, against a five-year average of 59 per cent and 75 per cent a year earlier. The two reports use different measures, so the figures are not directly comparable.<\/p>\n
