While nature gave the land of the white tiger, Rewa, remarkable gifts, this soil also dedicated to the country an institution that prepares brave sons for nation-building. The most important contribution to laying the foundation of this proud institution came from Maharaja Martand Singh Judev, the last ruler of the Rewa princely state, who generously donated his personal wealth in the national interest.

When other royals protected their property, Rewa’s king donated his estate

After Independence, when most rulers of princely states rushed to safeguard their property or put it to commercial use, with many palaces converted into hotels, Maharaja Martand Singh went the opposite way and dedicated his estate to the nation in the spirit of Bhamashah.

He donated Yuvraj Bhawan, a grand royal palace, to the Sainik School, and also dedicated about 301 acres of green land to education and service to the nation. His donations were not limited to buildings or land. Wherever there was a need, he generously supported the development of Rewa.

Phalaknuma Kothi housed an ITI as of that date.

Vyankat Bhawan, once a grand palace, was then an archaeological museum.

To begin industrialisation, he gave 100 acres of land to the Birla Group almost free of cost, where the Tamas factory was set up.

Establishment of Sainik School Rewa: a national heritage

In 1961 the Ministry of Defence began a series of Sainik Schools with the aim of preparing students for the National Defence Academy (NDA). During the search for land, Maharaja Martand Singh came forward and offered not only land but also his palace, Yuvraj Bhawan.

Caption: Maharaja Martand Singh with Colonel Narang.
