Traffic police were part of it. At New Gandhi Chowk at the divisional headquarters, the transport officer stopped riders who were driving without helmets. As soon as they stopped, a protective thread was tied on their wrists and they were asked to pledge to wear helmets. They were told that their own safety on the road was the greatest protection, and that if they wanted to protect their sisters, they should first protect themselves by wearing a helmet. A fine of Rs 500 was imposed, and they were sent off after being made to wear a helmet.

It was noteworthy that a “Helmet is a must” campaign was running continuously across the state, and inspired by it, the transport department launched its own campaign in a different style. After issuing the Rs 500 challan, the transport officer gifted riders a helmet so that they followed the rules in future. A large number of people joined the campaign that started at Gandhi Chowk and appreciated the initiative. Riders admitted that they did not wear helmets while driving, but said the RTO’s initiative had impressed them and they would no longer ride without one.

Transport officer Anpa Khan said a helmet was not just about following rules; it was the biggest shield to save a life in an accident. She said people often wore helmets to avoid a challan, whereas the real reason should be the safety of themselves and their families. She said such campaigns could change people’s behaviour, which was why the campaign was run on Raksha Bandhan and had shown results. She said the helmet campaign would continue in this manner.

[4

post-665","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-madhya-pradesh-news
["GET
