The call for a town shutdown was made for the first time in nearly three decades; traders had not closed the market against the police in Chakghat for thirty years. It was the first time traders have united against the police to shut the town. The issue is alleged to have started when a man named Radheshyam Soni of Chakghat, who ran a gold and silver shop at Naribari on the Uttar Pradesh border, was allegedly picked up by police. He was allegedly beaten and a large sum was extorted from him before he was released. The allegations said police had brought several people from Uttar Pradesh to Chakghat, and the station in-charge had demanded large sums from them in his private chamber; they were beaten, and an accused already in custody in another case was allegedly being made to say that these people had bought stolen goods and to confess to it. To escape police beatings and false cases, Radheshyam Soni paid a large sum, and after coming out told traders’ association members his ordeal. Along with Mandal president Mukesh Gupt and other office-bearers, Radheshyam went to Rewa and lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police and other senior officers, and also narrated his account to some social media people in Rewa, which began to circulate on mobile phones. The next day, while he was giving a statement to a so-called social media journalist in Chakghat, Naigarhi police, with the help of Chakghat police station, took Radheshyam away.

His family was not informed, nor was any warrant mentioned. The manner in which he was taken angered residents further, and the same day the Chakghat Vyapar Mandal meeting at the Hanuman temple decided on the town shutdown, which was observed on August 17. Mandal president Mukesh Kumar Gupta called the shutdown completely successful and thanked the traders. He said that if police atrocities did not stop, the agitation would continue.

In a news item circulated on social media, police said that Radheshyam Soni was wanted in several cases and that action had been taken against him. However, no statement from any senior police officer had been received on the entire matter by then.

[5

post-739","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-rewa-news
["GET
