The fertiliser shortage continued at the Hanumana fertiliser distribution centre. People took up positions in the queue overnight, a day in advance, and the condition of women and the elderly in line was pitiable. There was no standard for distribution: a farmer with ten decimals of land got two sacks on an Aadhaar card, and so did one with fifty decimals. When angry farmers, led by Congress leaders, staged a road blockade at the Nagar Parishad office crossing, SDM Rashmi Chaturvedi within 20-25 minutes called in TI Anil Kakade with police force, got fertiliser distribution restarted immediately and ended the blockade. Even so, it took hours for the angry people to calm down while lining up, and distribution continued until late evening. On information, SDOP Suchi Pathak arrived first, and shortly afterwards Collector Sanjay Jain and SP Aryas Prajapati also reached the spot and assessed the situation. After discussing with SDM Chaturvedi, they directed that four separate counters be opened in addition to the existing double-lock counters so that farmers face no difficulty, and the counters were started at once. Farmers felt considerable relief when the Collector and SP arrived.<\/p>\n

It was noteworthy that, with fertiliser prices high across the district, Collector Sanjay Jain and MLA Pradeep Patel had arranged some fertiliser supply to Mauganj district through action at the government level, which was sufficient. On the other hand, former MLA Sukhendra Singh Banna and his workers kept issuing statements on the shortage, and the former MLA himself sat on a sit-in at Mauganj. The same situation arose again that day. When distribution began in the morning, some people reportedly started quarrelling and were ready to come to blows, forcing the distributor to close the counter and leave. This enraged those who had been waiting for 24, 25 or even 30 hours. Seeing the hungry and thirsty people, Youth Congress district general secretary Nilesh Kesari and his team offered water pouches and, to some, samosas. On information, Congress block president Virendra Kumar Mishra, district president Harilal, Scheduled Tribe cell district president Shivlal Saket, Anil Kumar Rajak, Amritlal Shukla and many others arrived, joined the farmers in protesting against the arrangements, and announced a road blockade. Slogans such as \u201cWe want rights, not alms\u201d, \u201cFarmers\u2019 unity zindabad\u201d and \u201cThis useless government must be changed\u201d were raised. On information, SDM Chaturvedi reached the blockade site and ordered by phone from there that distribution begin, ending the blockade. But farmers\u2019 anger rose further, because those who had stayed back got fertiliser while those who had joined the agitation were left behind. After considerable effort, SDM Chaturvedi restored order, and TI Anil Kakade arrived with his force and started distribution with separate lines for women and men. Collector Sanjay Jain and SP Aryas Prajapati arrived by evening, discussed with the SDM, had new counters opened in addition to the double-lock counters and returned to Mauganj. Farmers breathed a sigh of relief after the assurance of the Collector and opening of separate counters.<\/p>\n

SDM Rashmi Chaturvedi said: \u201cThe crowd had grown large and some people tried to assault the distributor, because of which he closed the counter and left. They had staged a blockade; I came myself, restarted fertiliser distribution and ended it, but again some people are bent on assault. I am maintaining order by lining people up with police, and only after that can distribution begin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collector Sanjay Jain said: \u201cThere was nothing like that there. At our double-lock centre a slightly larger crowd had gathered. We have also opened four additional counters and were distributing by slip system, but some people suddenly came and created a ruckus, jumping the queue shouting that they wanted it first. That caused such an atmosphere, but the SDM, tehsildar and others were present and our police force is there. I and the SP have just come from there; the situation is completely peaceful and fertiliser distribution is going on normally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nilesh Kesari, Youth Congress joint district general secretary, said: \u201cFor months there has been a fertiliser shortage not only in Mauganj district but across the state. Farmers are suffering, yet the state government is not listening. If this continues, we will have to launch a fierce agitation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Virendra Mishra, Congress block president, said: \u201cFarmers are continually being mistreated like this at this centre. Earlier, after our former MLA Sukhendra Singh Banna intervened, things improved somewhat, but the same situation has returned. If it does not improve now, we will be compelled to launch a fierce agitation under former MLA Sukhendra Singh Banna.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
