Villagers were seen struggling almost daily with the transport of new and expecting mothers. Despite lakhs of rupees being spent every month on health facilities, villagers were not getting the Janani Express service. Sometimes private vehicles, sometimes cot-stretchers were the only means of carrying women to hospital. The latest case came from the Nipaniya community health centre in Papaundh, where, after delivery, a woman could not get a Janani Express to go home and her family had to take her on a tractor. Local villagers made a video of the tractor carrying the woman, which went viral on social media. Meanwhile, those responsible tried to cover up the negligence by saying the Janani Express was not available in the local network.

The full matter

Sita Kol, wife of RamPramod Kol, a resident of Nipaniya, had been admitted to the Nipaniya community health centre two days earlier for delivery. After a safe delivery, doctors discharged her at 11 am on Wednesday. Her family informed the Janani vehicle service to take her home, but no vehicle was available in the local network, so they could not get the service. The family then brought a tractor to the hospital and took her home. Hospital management said it did not know why the Janani Express did not arrive, and that the family took the woman by tractor after discharge.

New mother denied Janani Express, taken home on tractor

15 Janani Express vehicles operated in the district

According to information from the Health Department, 15 Janani Express vehicles were operating in the district for women in labour: one each in Budhar, Nipaniya and Beohari, two in Jaisinghnagar, one in Amjhor, one in Budhwa, one in Gohparu and one in Lafda, and others elsewhere in the district. The district also operated 2 ALS and 14 BLS 108 ambulances. Two were at the district hospital, one each at Keshwahi, Jaitpur and Singhpur, and others elsewhere in the district.

Their view

Sometimes, because two cases arrive at the same time, women do not get the Janani Express. Seriously ill women are given priority for the vehicle first. Because vehicles are not available in the local network, it takes time, and so families take women in their own vehicles.

Dr Rajesh Mishra, CMHO, Shahdol district

Similar cases had emerged earlier

1. On 31 July, when a woman went into labour in village Bara Baghelha of Papaundh, her family brought her across the river by boat to the road. When no ambulance was available in time, they took her by private vehicle to the Nipaniya community health centre. The family said the ambulance driver was unwilling to come up to the river bank because the vehicle would get stuck in mud, while the family took her to hospital by that same route with the help of a van.

2. On 26 July, from Budhwa village in Beohari, a woman in labour had to be carried to the Budhwa health centre by her family on a cot-stretcher. That video also went widely viral on social media. It was said that the lack of roads and other health facilities in the village forced the woman to be carried on a cot. Even after repeated cases coming to light, health services in the area had not improved.

[4

post-893","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-madhya-pradesh-news
["GET
