In the Kolan neighbourhood of North Tola, Nipaniya gram panchayat, Papaundh, under the Beohari distribution centre of the Madhya Pradesh East distribution company in the district, electricity department staff cut connections in heavy rain. For three days, poor tribal and Dalit residents were forced to spend nights in darkness. According to departmental officials, power to the whole neighbourhood was shut off because bills were not paid. Consumers there said that 80 percent of people in the whole village had not paid their bills, but power was cut only in the tribal neighbourhood. Residents said most Dalit and tribal families, for lack of information, could not pay the electricity bills that arrived on mobile phones. Because of this they failed to pay and connections got cut. The situation was then that children\u2019s studies were being disrupted.<\/p>\n

Villagers said either everyone who had not paid should have their connections cut, or their connections should be restored, and that information about bills should be given to them at home on time. With power off, children did homework by lantern or torch. Residents said there was also a danger from wild creatures in the village.
