Farmers could obtain urea through the cooperative societies. It was noteworthy that the fertiliser shortage was more acute across Mauganj district than in other districts, and for months there had been a scramble for fertiliser there. At Hanumana, people stood in line for two days yet got no fertiliser; instead the counter was closed and they left. When the counter did not open the next day, people began a sit-in protest. The administration was thrown into a flurry, and SDM Rashmi Chaturvedi came to the protest site and had distribution started by phone from there. As confusion continued, she stood on site herself and called in police to bring the situation under control and get arrangements back on track. On hearing the news, Collector Sanjay Jain and SP Aryas Prajapati also arrived and, making distribution from the double-lock counter easier, had four separate counters opened and fertiliser distributed to farmers until late at night. The next day too the available DAP fertiliser was distributed, but after stock ran out the chaos returned.

The happy news was that our deputy editor, senior journalist Sampatti Dasgupta, had raised the point that if fertiliser were distributed through societies, such scrambles could be avoided. The administration took note, and the rake due on the 23rd was to be sent for distribution to 75 cooperative societies, which was a relief for farmers.

[15

post-918","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-agriculture
["GET
