A music evening organised by Jhankar Musical Group, a new and emerging music group of Shahdol district, was held with melodious songs at Srija Plaza complex, opposite K Square, paying tribute to singers Mukesh Kumar Mathur and Kishore Kumar. Mukesh Kumar, known simply as Mukesh, and Kishore Kumar, whom people called Kishore Da, were hugely popular and acclaimed playback singers of the Hindi film industry, known for their sweet voices and fine songs. They lent their voices to many leading film actors. Mukesh got his big break in 1941 with the film Nirdosh, and his first song was ‘Dil jalta hai to jalne de’. Mukesh won a Filmfare Award for Anari and a National Film Award for Rajnigandha. He died of a heart attack during a tour of America on 27 August 1976. Kishore Kumar, born in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, sang about 2,500 songs in his sweet voice and in several Indian languages. Known for his distinctive singing style and comic roles, Kumar won 8 Filmfare Awards. The programme was dedicated to them. Music in India is an organised and rhythmic form of sound, a combination of raga, harmony, rhythm and expression. It is an ancient art and cultural expression found in all human societies. In India, the history of music is linked to the Vedic period and has been influenced by worship and religious rituals. It includes singing, instrumental music and dance, and can be divided into forms such as classical, light and folk music.
