The condition of many primary and middle schools in the district was deeply worrying because of dilapidated buildings. These schools, called temples of learning, had turned into ruins where children’s lives were at risk every day. The administration claimed budgets were allotted for repair and maintenance of buildings, but on the ground conditions remained the same.

Bhitwa middle school was a direct example. Only two teachers were posted for four classes. Student attendance was minimal. When asked, a teacher brushed it off citing a festival. That the blackboards in classrooms did not even carry the date was a clear sign of how indifferent the teachers were to teaching.

Dilapidated building, danger looming every moment

Plaster had fallen from the school building’s roof and even iron rods were visible. Deep cracks in the floor and protruding stones were a constant danger for children. Because the school was on the main road, there was an added traffic risk. There was not even a boundary wall in the premises, so security was completely absent.

School principal Rekha Sondhiya said senior officers had been informed of the situation, but all that came in the name of action was assurances.

Poor state of mid-day meal and toilets

The mid-day meal served at the school was of poor quality and served without a menu. The cook said plainly that she made whatever ingredients were provided. The toilet was completely dilapidated and unusable. There was no separate clean facility for boys and girls.

Administration’s version

Rewa Collector Dr Pratibha Pal said school buildings in the district had been examined before the monsoon. Fifty schools had been declared dilapidated and alternative arrangements made. If similar conditions were found in other schools, they would be added to the list and action taken.
