Teen archer Kumkum Mohod wins historic Asian Games recurve gold in shoot-off
Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod became the first Indian woman to win the Asian Games individual recurve title, beating South Korea’s Oh Yejin in a one-arrow shoot-off.

Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod has won the women’s individual recurve gold medal at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, a result described by several reports as a first for Indian archery. She defeated South Korea’s Oh Yejin 6-5 in the final after the match finished level at 5-5 and had to be settled by a single-arrow shoot-off, according to The Statesman and Open magazine.
In the decider, Oh shot an eight and Mohod answered with a perfect ten. Open reported that Mohod twice recovered from a deficit during the match, including a run of three consecutive tens in the fifth set that forced the shoot-off. The Statesman wrote that she is the first Indian woman to win this Asian Games title and the first Indian woman to win any Asian Games medal in individual recurve.
Her path to the final was demanding. The Statesman reported that she was ranked tenth after the qualification round, then beat the reigning world champion, South Korea’s Kang Chaeyoung, in the quarter-finals, and China’s Zhu Jingyi 6-2 in the semi-finals. Open gave the quarter-final score as 6-4. According to The Statesman, she was the first Indian woman to reach the individual recurve final at the Asian Games. China’s Huang Yuwei took the bronze medal by beating Zhu.
The individual title was Mohod’s second gold of the Games. A day earlier, she, Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma beat South Korea 5-3 in the final of the women’s team recurve event, Open reported. She also won silver in the mixed team event alongside Dhiraj Bommadevara, when India lost 3-5 to China in the final. In total, the 17-year-old, who was making her Asian Games debut, returned with two golds and one silver.
The win carries wider consequences for Indian archery. The Statesman reported that the gold earned India an individual quota place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while Oh secured one for South Korea. Open noted that India’s only earlier individual recurve medal at the Asian Games was Tarundeep Rai’s men’s silver at Guangzhou in 2010, which gives some sense of how rarely Indian recurve archers have reached the podium in the individual events.
The archery result was one of several highlights for India on the same day. Open reported that the country’s overall medal tally stood at 77 at the time of its report, made up of 17 golds, 25 silvers and 35 bronzes. India went on to finish the Games in fourth place overall. Neither report quoted Mohod or her coaches directly, and further reaction from the archer and her team is likely to follow as the contingent returns home.
