CBI Takes Over Bhilai Steel Plant Scrap Theft Case; 35-Member Team Formed
The CBI has taken over the probe into the alleged organised theft of 250 tonnes of scrap from Bhilai Steel Plant, forming a 35-member team led by two IPS officers. Durg Police have already put 21 accused in jail.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has formally taken over the investigation into the alleged organised theft of 250 tonnes of iron scrap from the Bhilai Steel Plant, after the state government approved the transfer of the case. A report published on October 28 says a 35-member special investigation team has been formed, led by two IPS officers and four officers of DSP rank.
The team reportedly includes no officers from Chhattisgarh or from the local CBI unit, apparently to keep the inquiry confidential and free from local pressure. Durg Police are preparing to hand over their case diaries, digital evidence and documents to the agency.
Durg Police uncovered the syndicate on May 26, 2026, on a written complaint from the plant management. After about four months of investigation, 21 accused have been jailed. Police seized property worth about ₹3.22 crore, including stolen scrap, a dumper truck, a backhoe loader and chain-mounted machines.
The CBI is expected to examine fake gate passes, manipulation of weighbridge slips, the possible role of security personnel and the financial transactions of an interstate network.
The report adds that four women inspectors are part of the team and that some members visited the plant to collect preliminary information about its yards, gates and security systems, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Bhilai Steel Plant is among the largest public sector steel units in the country, and it has repeatedly drawn attention for theft and safety issues. The CBI inquiry will show whether the case extends beyond the people already arrested and whether any lapses in plant security allowed the scrap to leave the premises.
