In Rewa district’s Semariya police station area, police arrested a man accused of promising marriage to a young woman through social media and raping her over two years. The accused also allegedly kept misleading the woman and her family by claiming to be the cyber crime head of Uttarakhand Police. During the filmy-style arrest, he allegedly pointed a fake pistol at the police, but the team surrounded and overpowered him.

According to police, the accused was Anurag Sen alias Arjun Kumar, son of Ramfer, aged 33, a resident of Birpur Road, Mankapur, Gonda district (Uttar Pradesh), who was then living on Mohini Road, Dehradun (Uttarakhand).

The accused allegedly befriended the woman on social media about two years earlier and gradually drew her in with a promise of marriage. During this time, he allegedly had physical relations with her several times in hotels and at a home, and also made objectionable videos of her.

When the woman pressed for marriage, he allegedly hid his real identity and showed a fake ID and documents, and later began blackmailing her with threats to make the objectionable videos viral on social media. Fed up, the woman went to the police station with her family and lodged a complaint.

After the complaint, police devised a special plan and called the accused to meet through the woman. As soon as the police team reached the spot, he pulled out a fake pistol-shaped lighter and pointed it at them. There was brief panic, but accompanying staff surrounded and caught him.

Police seized a fake Aadhaar card, a fake police ID card, a pistol-shaped lighter, an iron knife and a motorcycle from him. The investigation found that he had given his name as Anurag Sen to deceive the woman and had had fake documents prepared in that name.

SDOP Sirmour Umesh Prajapati said a case had been registered against the accused under sections for rape, fraud and the IT Act. Semariya police station in-charge Inspector Vikas Kapis said the accused had been arrested and produced before the court.

Inspector Vikas Kapis, Sub-Inspector Ramyash Rawat, Head Constable Pramod Agnihotri and Constables Shubhwant Mishra and Prabal Tripathi were commended for their role in the operation.
