The Beehar River Front project, developed under the Madhya Pradesh government’s ambitious redensification scheme, was given the prestigious national award for best construction in the recreation category by the Indian Building Congress (IBC) in 2025. The achievement reflected the vision, craftsmanship and environmental sensitivity of the Rewa district administration.

The Beehar River Front project was a notable initiative for Rewa’s beautification, environmental protection and social development. Under the state’s redensification scheme, it was developed on government land at Khanna Chowk as a 1.30-km river front running from Baba Ghat to Kotwali Ghat.

Under the project, a gravity wall was built along the whole riverbank to ensure stability. Two walkways, each 3.90 metres wide, were developed along the river, with a 3.70-metre-wide green area between them for public use. The whole area was secured with a boundary wall.

In particular, the Panchmath area was redeveloped over 5.00 acres, combining modernity and cultural heritage. The Shiva temple established by Adi Shankaracharya in the Panchmath complex was restored. Replicas of the country’s four main maths were built, with water bodies and landscaped lawns in front of them. A saints’ residence, a cow shelter, a grand entrance gate and a parking area were also built.

Attractive light poles along the entire river front added to both beauty and safety, and old ghats were also preserved under the project. The extensive construction began on January 6, 2021, and was completed on May 10, 2025.
