Sirpur, an ancient town on the banks of the Mahanadi river in Mahasamund district, has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List under the name "Sirpur Cultural and Archaeological Landscape". The listing was reported on October 22, 2026.

The town is known for its ancient temples, Buddhist monasteries, rare sculptures and architectural beauty, as well as for its history of religious tolerance, where different faiths flourished side by side.

A place on the Tentative List is a necessary early step before a nomination for full World Heritage status can be made. It does not mean Sirpur has been granted that status, and the final decision depends on a detailed dossier and evaluation by UNESCO's advisory bodies, a process that usually takes years.

The state government says it is working to preserve and promote the region's heritage. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai leads those efforts, while Tourism and Culture Minister Rajesh Agrawal is overseeing a focus on global recognition for key archaeological sites and growth in cultural tourism.

The listing is expected to raise the international profile of Sirpur and improve its prospects for tourism development. For nearby communities, more visitors could mean more work for guides, drivers, artisans and small businesses, although conservation and visitor management will have to keep pace.

Sirpur lies not far from Raipur, the state capital, which makes it an easy addition to cultural tours of central India. The site's protection, research and presentation to visitors will be the main tasks ahead as the state prepares its case for the next stage.
